Toby Derrick

Growing up in Melbourne Australia, Toby was a 'Jackass' inspired active kid always getting into trouble. His parents, being Acting Agents, channeled his energy into dance classes, football and acting. Toby really enjoyed the audition rooms, and was lucky enough to find himself on set of Ned Kelly as an extra at 8 years old. Wandering the set with his father Peter, they noticed a young man sitting out the front of a caravan minding his own business. Peter pointed out "Toby, that's Heath Ledger, that's the man playing Ned Kelly" and so naturally they walked over and introduced themselves. Wanting to inspire the young extra, Heath showed Toby his character research inside his caravan. Confused with the huge amount of effort Heath had gone to in order to become Ned Kelly, Toby piped up "So Heath, are you getting paid for this?" Heath not knowing what to say, turned to Peter for an answer. Peter just shrugged. So Heath turned to the 8 year old Toby and said "Nah mate, I just do it for the love of it". Toby couldn't believe it. "Oh dude!" He replied. "You have to ask them for some money because they're paying me to be here!". As Toby grew into a young adult he decided to push his dance study to a professional standard and studied at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. He graduated in 2012 and was ready to take on the dance world. Toby met Shaun Parker at a dance workshop in Sydney, and Shaun decided to give him his professional debut. With Shaun Parker & Company, Toby toured Europe, The Middle-East, Asia and Australia with shows King, Happy As Larry and Trolleys to critical acclaim. Whilst in Perth, Toby also performed on stage with Barking Gecko Theatre Company in 1507, directed by John Sheedy. After travelling the world, Toby realized he had no interest whatsoever dancing in productions and instead wanted to work in film and television. He auditioned for NIDA and WAAPAs prestigious acting courses and was excepted into both. Spoiled for choice, Toby chose NIDA. After enduring what Toby describes as '3 years imprisonment' at NIDA, he hit the ground running on Australian TV. In 2018, his first year out, he appeared on the Aussie soap Home and Away and ABC's Superwog. Following this Toby continued to book work, establishing himself in Australian TV with roles on Neighbours, Informer 3838 and Halifax: Retribution. In 2021, he made his acting debut at MIFF with nominated short film 'As One'. Acting aside, Toby is a fitness freak and loves inspiring people to better themselves.
